Chicago duo Coins (Angela Mullenhour and Ellen Bunch) first graced our ears and yours with 2010's Recital Pressures; its restrained instrumentation served to highlight an obvious collaborative spark and all its resulting earworms. But where Recital Pressures was subtle, Psychic Orchid (PT068) embodies a uniquely spirited ethereality – a quick glance at the titles nod toward more than a touch of the mystical. "I Live on the Sun" strums to life on Side A with a swooning harmony that touches on many moods in its three minutes. From there, it's a journey to Psychic Orchid's spiritual center, including the galloping vocal juxtaposition of "Moon Song," guitars and analog synths practically switching places on the climactic conclusion to "Lightning Song," the rich piano tones of "Watching the Wheels," deep swimming on "Scuba," and the ominous "Blood."
